Currently, the government, corporations, and the public are intensively digitizing their business processes. To support this process, many parties have taken the initiative to develop various digital applications. Because they do not synergize with each other, many digital applications are not connected to each other. As a result, "digital islands" are created in the community.

This kind of condition is, of course, contrary to the spirit of digitalization, which aims to dismantle silos and make it easier for people to connect with one another. Such "digital islands" are undoubtedly detrimental to application developers because the users of their services are limited. In addition, the community and other stakeholders are also disadvantaged because they do not get optimal benefits from a digital application.

Such a thing, of course, cannot happen. To solve this problem, President University collaborated with PT Jababeka & Co. and Fablab to develop a Community Service (PKM) program with the theme Implementation of Smart Ecosystem 4.0 through Jababeka Smart Township Super-App Based on Open Innovation. Jababeka & Co. is a subsidiary of the Jababeka Group, while Fablab is an institution engaged in HR training and Industry 4.0-based business development. This activity received funding assistance from the Research Program of Freedom Learning Freedom Campus Policy and Community Service Based on Research Findings and Paripurna PTS, the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology for the budget year 2021.

Dr. Adhi Setyo Santoso, ST, MBA (in Information Technology & Media), explained his PKM concept in an international seminar on community service, which was held on Monday-Thursday (20-23 December 2021. This seminar was held in hybrid. Some participants and speakers attended offline, while others took part online. All these PKM activities, including the seminar, which took place in hybrid, were held thanks to the support of the Merdeka Learning Campus Merdeka program organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek).

In the seminar, explained Adhi, there are two advantages in developing the Jababeka Smart Township Super-App based on Smart Ecosystem 4.0 and carrying the concept of Open Innovation. He further explained, “Smart Ecosystem is a digital platform that is open to the joining of various other innovative applications. The key factor is that the application must be integrated with various other applications in Jababeka Smart Township.” Adhi said part of the Smart Ecosystem concept has also been adopted by several regions in Indonesia that want to develop intelligent and integrated services. Among them, in DKI Jakarta Province, Bandung City, Makassar City, Surabaya City, Semarang City, Yogyakarta City, and Denpasar City.

Meanwhile, the understanding of the Open Innovation concept is that applications that fill Smart Ecosystem 4.0 will not only be developed jointly by PresUniv, Fablab, and Jababeka but also involve external parties. So, it is not closed or exclusive but inclusive or open. "The basic idea of ??this concept is the importance of collaboration which is one of the characteristics of Industry 4.0 and is in line with the concept of the mutual cooperation economy. So, corporations, organizations, and individuals can also participate. They can develop new applications, but they can also improve applications already available in the ecosystem. Because only in this way, the applications in the Smart Ecosystem 4.0 will be better able to answer the needs of an increasingly complex society, continue to develop and change rapidly," explained Adhi, explaining the concept.

Developers face several challenges in developing their applications. First, how can they create applications that are integrated with other applications already in the Jababeka Smart Township Super-App. Second, they must develop applications that are very easy to access. "Simply put, these new applications must be accessible by residents only through smartphones," said Adhi.

Currently, there are at least four service applications that are integrated into the Jababeka Smart Township Super-App, namely service applications developed by the Jababeka industrial estate manager, services developed by the community or society, services developed by industry (companies in Jababeka industrial area) and start-up companies, as well as services developed by government agencies.

Support Startup Development

So, this Jababeka Smart Township Super-App can be considered as a virtual area in Jababeka where anyone can collaborate. Through this collaboration, continued Adhi, it is hoped that new startup companies will be born. For this reason, there are a series of activities that will support this PKM activity. Among other things, student recruitment to become community assistants in developing innovations and applications in Smart Township and various other supporting activities.

Then, there is also a hackathon competition that involves public participation. So, it is not just students who are participants. For the hackathon winners, said Adhi, they will receive financial support to develop their applications to integrate with the Smart Ecosystem 4.0 platform. At the same time, the hackathon winners will continue to be encouraged to become new startups.

Another activity is that all reports on PKM activities in the context of Independent Learning of the Independent Campus will be published in various scientific publications, such as journals both at national and international levels.

Adhi hopes various impacts will appear through PKM activities themed Jababeka Smart Township Super-App. For example, Smart Citizens' creation will increase community cohesiveness, Smart Business & Innovation through research-based activities, intelligent data, sharing economy, startup incubation, and accelerated development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Another impact is the creation of a Smart Environment, which is reflected in conservation efforts, sustainable use of resources, and the development of more environmentally-friendly lifestyles. Then, it is hoped that Smart Mobility will also be created. For example, when people move from one place to another, they can use public transportation that is more environmentally friendly. Then, the last one is Smart Security.

According to Adhi, through the PKM Jababeka Smart Township Super-App activity, PresUniv wants to help Jababeka's ideas in developing cities that are innovative, sustainable, and able to adapt to rapid changes. “I also want Jababeka Smart Township to contribute to encouraging the growth of all economic sectors in society, including the Jababeka industrial area. We do this through various activities based on creativity, innovation, and digital technology. However, everything is still in the frame of sustainable development,” concluded Adhi.
