Dr. Nino Viartasiwi obtained her master's and doctoral degrees in International Relations from the Graduate School of International Relations, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto-Japan. As Nino focused her research on conflict studies, her Ph.D. dissertation discusses the political economy of violence in the West Papua conflict. Later on, she shifts her research interest to the issue of forced displacement as conflict repercussion and the transnationalism issue.

As a member of a group and as an individual, Nino received research grants and education grants from reputable institutions such as the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, the Sumitomo Foundation, the British Institute, MEXT of the Japan Government, the SUN Scholarship (CEU Summer University), the May 18 Memorial Foundation, among others.
