The 2020 United States Presidential Election will be held shortly. Considering that the leader of this superpower has a great influence on the dynamics of international relations, President University International Relations Study Program in collaboration with the President Center for International Studies (PRECIS) held a webinar themed "The Land of Uncle Sam's Festival of Democracy Challenges" on Saturday, 24 October 2020.

According to Dr. Muhammad A.S. Hikam, MA, Ph.D., Head of International Relations Study Program, this webinar not only wants to talk from the side of international political experts but also from the side of people who have seen and experienced presidential and political elections in the United States. Therefore, this webinar invites Muhammad Sigit Andhi Rahman, Ph.D., President University's Lecturer in International Relations who has a background of living and studying in the U.S. for 5 years, and Lily Hikam, Ph.D., Molecular Genetic Scientist from The Medical School of Medicine University of California, which also has lived in the U.S. for 15 years.

At the start of the discussion, Lily talked about the U.S. presidential electoral system, including popular votes and electoral college votes. After that, she explained the differences and similarities in the characteristics of the two U.S. presidential candidates, Joe Biden and Donald Trump. In addition, she also explained the voting process during the pandemic and its challenges. Furthermore, Sigit described the historical context of the voting system itself and outlined lessons learned from the previous presidential election. 

During the question and answer session, the webinar was filled with lots of questions from the participants which proved that many people were interested in this topic. (PT/SL)

 


 

PRECIS Webinar Series: Tantangan Pesta Demokrasi Negeri Paman Sam

 

Pemilihan Presiden Amerika Serikat 2020 akan digelar dalam waktu dekat. Mengingat pemimpin negara adidaya ini memiliki pengaruh yang besar terhadap dinamika hubungan internasional, maka Program Studi Hubungan Internasional President University bekerja sama dengan President Center for International Studies (PRECIS) mengadakan webinar bertema “Tantangan Pesta Demokrasi Negeri Paman Sam” pada Sabtu, 24 Oktober 2020.

Menurut Dr. Muhammad A.S. Hikam, MA, Ph.D., Ketua Program Studi Hubungan Internasional, webinar ini tidak hanya ingin berbicara dari sisi pakar politik internasional, tetapi juga dari sisi masyarakat yang pernah melihat dan mengalami pemilihan presiden dan politik di Amerika Serikat secara langsung. Maka dari itu, webinar ini mengundang Muhammad Sigit Andhi Rahman, Ph.D., Dosen Hubungan Internasional President University yang memiliki latar belakang tinggal dan menempuh pendidikan di AS selama 5 tahun dan Lily Hikam, Ph.D., ilmuwan genetika molekuler dari fakultas kedokteran University of California, yang sudah menetap di AS selama 15 tahun. 

Di awal diskusi, Lily berbicara mengenai sistem pemilihan presiden Amerika Serikat, termasuk suara populer dan suara kolase elektoral. Setelah itu, Ia memaparkan perbedaan dan persamaan karakteristik kedua calon kandidat presiden AS, Joe Biden dan Donald Trump. Selain itu, Ia juga menjelaskan proses pemungutan suara selama pandemi dan tantangannya. Lebih jauh, Sigit menggambarkan konteks historis dari sistem pemungutan suara itu sendiri dan menguraikan pelajaran yang didapat dari pemilihan presiden sebelumnya.

Selama sesi tanya jawab, webinar dipenuhi dengan banyak pertanyaan dari para peserta yang membuktikan bahwa banyak orang yang tertarik dengan topik ini. (PT/SL)
