Dr. Jeanne Francoise, the lecturer of the International Relations Study Program, President University (PresUniv), was one of the speakers at the Nuclear Webinar held by the Indonesian Nuclear Society Association (HIMNI), Thursday (10/2). This webinar presented other female speakers, namely Hanna Yasmine, a researcher from the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) - National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and at the same time a postgraduate student at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea, and Ika F. Kusumaningrum, a diplomat at the Directorate of International Security and Disarmament, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

In her presentation, Jeanne, an expert in the study of defense heritage, said that the emergence of nuclear is always associated with two historiographies, namely nuclear in the perspective of defense heritage and nuclear in the concept of national security. Based on an analysis of defense heritage, nuclear science was developed by a woman, Marie Curie, who discovered radioactive elements from her former doctoral supervisor. Meanwhile, in the context of national security, she said, "Nuclear energy must be seen as a necessity for all people and in the name of Indonesia's prosperity."

Based on the 2018 Energy Outlook published by the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), Indonesia's fossil energy reserves are running low. Oil reserves will run out in the next nine years, gas reserves will run out in 42 years, and coal will run out in 68 years (Women's Coalition, 2018). Learning from the Chernobyl disaster, Jeanne has high hopes for BRIN to make Indonesia a research country in the nuclear field, especially to conduct nuclear power plants (PLTN). “This means that Indonesia must create several research novelties in the field of nuclear science. For example, measuring nuclear risks, nuclear economic benefits, to nuclear digital animation videos for children," she said. (Silvia Desi Betrice, PR team. Photo: Jeanne Francoise)
