President Development Center (PDC), President University (PresUniv), in collaboration with Maestro Digital Service held a webinar themed "Taiwan: Between Independence or Reunification", Thursday (4/11). This webinar presented two International Relations experts from Universitas Indonesia, they were Hariyadi Wirawan, Ph.D. and Broto Wardoyo, Ph.D., and led by Haryanto Aryodiguno, lecturer in the International Relations Study Program, PresUniv, who is also the Director of PDC. This webinar was opened by Dr. (HC) Setyono Djuandi Darmono, the founder of Jababeka Group and PresUniv.

According to Darmono, if Indonesia becomes a developed country in 2045, Indonesia can play an important role in this issue. "But, because it is still a developing country, Indonesia can only play a small role, such as providing, understanding, and inviting its citizens to participate in directing the country's economy to be more advanced," said Darmono. In addition, Darmono said that by seeing this event, the Indonesian people would understand that unity is very important to be able to maintain the stability of a country.

In his presentation, Hariyadi said that the Chinese leader, Deng Xiaoping, in 1979 had proposed to reintegrate Taiwan into the People's Republic of China with the concept of one country two systems. This is similar to the case of the return of Hong Kong and Macau to China. In 2019, Chinese PM Xi Jinping proposed the same thing. The reunification is targeted for completion in 2049, coinciding with China's 100th anniversary. However, the idea is opposed by the people of Taiwan, who still want a one-government state system. Meanwhile, Broto conveyed the problem that Taiwan will face, that is, the gap between generations. He said, “Taiwan's young generation is considered to have no sense of defending the mainland. They prefer the status quo but lead to reunification. Unlike the older generation who want to build their own country. This problem may not exist now but will be occurred in the next few years.” (Chiky Nur Gunawan, ICC team. Photo: Chiky Nur Gunawan)
