What's happening in PresUniv

Something fundamental is threatening democracy, and our collective perspective is on new technologies that are rapidly changing: social media convergence, news curation, algorithms, bots, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics. M. Raudy Gathmyr, S.Sos., M.Sc., Head of the Communication Study Program, President University (PresUniv), conveyed this in the Gerakan Nasional Literasi Digital 2021 di Kabupaten Bekasi untuk Indonesia Webinar, Wednesday (18/8). Raudy delivered the material "Digital Culture: Memahami Propaganda Komputasional sebagai Sebuah Fenomena Komunikasi Publik Digital."

Raudy explained that computational propaganda uses algorithms, automation, and human curation to distribute manipulative and misleading information (not actual, not factual, hoax, and hate speech). This happens not only in politics but also in business, academia, and other fields. Raudy said that nowadays, people always consume any material through social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. It is increasingly rare for people to consume information from traditional media.

Raudy revealed that this computational propaganda could disseminate information quickly and in large quantities. “Social media makes it easier for people to spread information through the copy and paste feature. Unfortunately, many do not verify first the truth of the information," he said. Raudy reminded two actors play an essential role in misinformation and disinformation, namely bots and human factors. “Therefore, as part of digital culture, we must have digital skills. Not only in general but also digital political skills," he said. (Gilang Suryanata, PR team. Photo: Gilang Suryanata)
