Participating in the most prestigious maritime mootcourt competition in the world that was held at 1-5 July 2019 in Rotterdam is a challenging yet rewarding experiences for the delegation sent by President University Law School, Marie Dame C. Simanjuntak (Law 2016), Natalia Eliana Bato (Law 2016) and Reynaldo Arya (Law 2018).
Mootcourt is a simulation of a trial proceedings, where the participants will have to think, act and behave as a lawyer protecting the interest of their clients. Universities encourages their students to participate in mootcourts, as it will train the capability of the students in applying the law in real situation, a skill desired by lawfirms, companies and government.
Similarly, International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot (IMLAM) emphasize on the cases concerning commercial maritime disputes. Throughout the 20 years of the competition history, the topic each year will differ from one another, whereas this year topic revolves around charterparties, a contract of ship-leasing. Furthermore, as the jurisdiction that applies in the competition is English law, the participants, regardless of their country origin, will be required to study and research commercial maritime law of England.
“Joining IMLAM was a great opportunity for law students to get exposure to the internetional environment as well as to the atmosphere shared with top students from all around the world. It also enchanced their research, writing and analytical skills in addition to training their public speaking skills and confidence as future legal practitioners.” said Ulya Yasmine Prisandani, Coach of President University IMLAM Team.
This moot-competition that was participated by universities across 30 countries was proven to be very competitive especially towards newcomer team such as President University, however, the delegates were able to prevail over other university with illustrious history on international scale, namely the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
“Though it is very suprising for us as a newcomer to go against the best university in Mexico, we are very optimistic to compete with them, we believe that our months worth of research will not be wasted, and the results shows” said Reynaldo Arya.

Berpartisipasi didalam kompetisi peradilan semu maritim yang paling bergengsi di dunia yang diselenggarakan di Rotterdam, 1 - 5 Juli 2019 adalah suatu pengalaman yang sangat menantang, namun membuahkan hasil bagi delegasi yang dikirimkan oleh Prodi Hukum President University, Marie Dame C. Simanjuntak (Hukum 2016), Natalia Eliana Bato (Hukum 2016) and Reynaldo Arya (Hukum 2018).
Peradilan semu adalah proses simulasi jalannya suatu persidangan, dimana para partisipan diminta untuk berpikir, bertindak dan bertingkah layaknya sebagai seorang pengacara yang melindungi kepentingan kliennya. Universitas, baik luar maupun dalam negeri sangat mendukung dan mendorong para mahasiswa untuk berpartisipasi dalam peradilan semu, karena akan melatih kemampuan para mahasiswa untuk meng-aplikasikan hukum ke dalam situasi nyata, suatu kemampuan yang sangat di hargai oleh firma hukum, perusahaan dan pemerintah.
International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot merupakan peradilan semu yang berpusat terhadap sengketa maritim komersial. Sepanjang 20 tahun kompetisi peradilan semu ini hadir, topik yang ditawarkan selalu berbeda tiap tahunnya, dimana tahun ini mengangkat topik yang berpusat pada charterparties, kontrak sewa-menyewa kapal. Selain itu, yurisdiksi yang berlaku pada kompetisi peradilan semu ini adalah hukum Inggris, para peserta, darimanapun mereka berasal, akan diperlukan untuk mempelajari dan memahami hukum maritim komersial di Inggris.
“Berkompetisi didalam IMLAM merupakan kesempatan besar bagi mahasiswa hukum untuk mendapatkan eksposur ke lingkungan internasional sekaligus atmosfir yang sama dengan mahasiswa teratas di seluruh dunia. Kompetisi ini juga mengasah kemampuan analitik, riset dan menulis serta melatih kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa didepan umum and kepercayaan diri sebagai penegak hukum masa depan.” Ujar Pelatih Delegasi IMLAM President University, Ulya Yasmine Prisandani.
Kompetisi peradilan semu yang di ikuti oleh universitas-universitas dari lebih dari 30 negara terbukti sangat kompetitif terutama terhadap tim pendatang baru seperti President University, namun, delegasi berhasil untuk mengalahkan universitas-universitas dengan prestasi gemerlang di skala internasional, salah satunya adalah National Autonomous University of Mexico.
“Walau sangat mengejutkan harus berhadapan dengan universitas terbaik di Mexico, kami sangat optimis dapat bertanding dengan mereka, kami percaya juga bahwa hasil dari riset berbulan-bulan tidak akan hancur sia-sia, dan hasilnya terlihat”, ujar Reynaldo Arya. (RA/PR)
