The Master of Technology Management Study Program, President University (PresUniv), held a research methodology workshop entitled "Experimental Design: Case Study Useful Tool" Saturday (21/8). The workshop, which was held online, presented Prof. Dr. Ir. Sugiarto, M.Sc., a statistician from Universitas Prasetiya Mulya, as a speaker. According to Sugiarto, experimental design is a useful tool for completing case studies. "This experimental research is a study with certain controlled conditions so that one or several variables can be monitored to test hypotheses," he said.

Furthermore, Sugiarto explained, in experimental research, researchers will build a specific condition to test the proposed theory or proposition, supervise the experiments carried out and then collect data to measure the impact of the independent variable on the dependent variable. He said experimental research consists of pure experimental research (true experiment) that uses a random design and a quasi-experimental that uses a non-random design. Sugiarto also revealed that the implementation of the experimental design could be carried out in two forms, namely laboratory experiments or field experiments.

Then, what is the difference between laboratory experiments and field experiments? Sugiarto explained that laboratory experiments are situations where the researcher has fuller control over the research setting and extraneous variables. It is used when data are not yet available and must be generated. Meanwhile, field experiments are a research project involving experimental manipulations applied in a natural environment. It is used when data are available in the field, and it is used when data are available in the field. Sugiarto added that the experimental design has four basic types of design: replication, randomization, grouping or local control, and symmetry. "In each laboratory experiment, replication and randomization must be carried out to allow the significance test to apply, while grouping and symmetry depend on the design used," he explained.
