Expanding knowledge in China, which is one of the leading countries in technological development is certainly a dream pursued by technology enthusiasts. This dream was also achieved by Melvin Harsono, an Electrical Engineering alumni batch 2013. In an e-talk show held by President University recently, Melvin shared his story of continuing his studies and working in China.
Melvin, who had long been interested in technology, immediately decided to pursue his postgraduate studies in China shortly after he finished his studies at President University. "If I'm interested in technology, why don't I choose the best country in the field right away?" said Melvin. According to him, China is currently the country with the best technological development. It is shown by the high technology literacy possessed by people live there, where at the moment, cash is no longer acceptable in most places. Instead, people use barcodes scanned through their own mobile phones. For this reason, he decided to pursue his Master's degree at Beijing Jiao Tong University, China, one of the oldest universities in China. Getting a full scholarship, he immediately went to graduate school a month after the he graduated from the undergraduate program.
For his master's studies, Melvin took Computer Science and Technology major. He mentioned that in his study, mathematics became very important in studying artificial intelligence (Artificial Intelligent) which is currently the focus of his studies. While studying, Melvin also worked part-time at one of the multinational Chinese internet technology companies known as the TikTok company home, namely Bytedance.
Through this e-talk show, Melvin advised anyone who wants to study abroad to plan it as quickly as possible and study hard. He also mentioned that English proficiency was important. But he said it will not be a problem for President University students because President University uses English as the instruction language in lectures. In addition, the international environment at President University also made him have the experience of interacting with friends from other countries so he was not surprised when he had to involve in group work with people from different backgrounds and countries.
Currently, Melvin works in several places, one of which is Computec Japan, a Japanese IT solution provider company, as a systems engineer and project manager for several projects, while trying to register for Doctoral programs abroad. (JD/SL)
Alumni Sharing Session: Melvin, Seorang Penggemar Teknologi yang Mengejar Ilmu dan Karir di China, Negeri Terdepan dalam Teknologi
Mengejar ilmu di China, salah satu negara terdepan dalam perkembangan teknologi, tentu merupakan sebuah impian yang ditempuh bagi pecinta teknologi. Impian ini juga yang berhasil diraih oleh Melvin Harsono, alumni Teknik Elektro angkatan 2013. Dalam e-talk show yang diadakan President University baru-baru ini, Melvin membagikan kisahnya melanjutkan studi dan bekerja di China.
Melvin, yang sejak lama telah tertarik dengan teknologi langsung memutuskan untuk melanjutkan studi pascasarjana di China sesaat setelah ia menyelesaikan kuliahnya di President University. “Apabila saya tertarik dalam teknologi, mengapa saya tidak langsung memlih negara yang terbaik dalam bidang tersebut?” ujar Melvin. Menurutnya, China saat ini menjadi negara dengan perkembangan teknologi terbaik. Terbukti dengan tingginya literasi teknologi yang dimiliki masyarakat China, di mana saat ini masyarakat tidak lagi bertransaksi menggunakan uang tunai, melainkan menggunakan barcode yang discan melalui telepon genggamnya masing-masing. Untuk alasan itulah ia memilih menitih kuliah S2 nya di China, lebih tepatnya di Universitas Beijing JiaoTong, salah satu universitas tertua di China. Mendapatkan beasiswa penuh, ia langsung menjalani kuliah S2 nya sebulan setelah diwisuda.
Untuk studi masternya, Melvin mengambil fokus Komputer Sains dan Teknologi. Ia menyebutkan bahwa dalam studinya, matematika menjadi ilmu yang sangat penting dalam mempelajari kecerdasan buatan (Artificial Intelligent) yang saat ini menjadi fokus studinya. Sembari kuliah, Melvin juga sempat bekerja paruh waktu di salah satu perusahaan multinasional teknologi internet China yang terkenal sebagai rumah perusahaan TikTok, yaitu Bytedance.
Melalui e-talk show ini, Melvin memberikan masukan bagi siapapun yang ingin belajar ke luar negeri untuk merencanakannya secepat mungkin dan belajar dengan giat. Ia juga menyebutkan bahwa kemampuan berbahasa Inggris itu penting penting. Tetapi ia mengatakan tentu ini bukanlah suatu yang baru bagi mahasiswa President University karena President University menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar perkuliahan. Selain itu, lingkungan internasional di President University juga membuatnya memiliki pengalaman berinteraksi dengan teman-teman dari negara lain sehingga ia tidak terkejut saat harus berada di lingkungan dengan orang-orang yang berbeda latar belakang dan negara.
Saat ini, Melvin bekerja di beberapa tempat, salah satunya adalah Computec Jepang, perusahaan penyedia solusi IT Jepang, sebagai insinyur sistem dan kompanyon proyek manajer untuk beberapa proyek, sambil berusaha untuk mendaftar program Doktor di luar negeri. (JD/SL)
