Through Global Talks, Students at President University Discover the Realities of Modern-Day Migration
September 11, 2025

Migration is often seen as a hopeful path toward better opportunities, especially for workers seeking employment abroad. However, a shocking video shown at President University’s “Global Talks” revealed the darker side of this journey. It followed the story of someone who left Indonesia for a high-paying job, only to vanish, later found to be a victim of a trafficking scam, forced into labor and abuse.

United Nations International Organization for Migration (UN-IOM) Indonesia’s Chief of Mission, Mr. Jeffrey Labovitz, emphasized that migration today is more complex than ever. He highlighted critical issues such as lack of fair labor agreements, human trafficking networks, and modern slavery. “Doing my best to help people,” he said, reflecting on his personal experiences assisting refugees and migrants around the world.

The UN-IOM works to protect migrants, raise awareness, and support safe and legal migration channels. But beyond the work of institutions, it is also the responsibility of young people to be aware of the risks and help spread accurate information about the realities of migration.

This talk served as a call to action for youth. By staying informed, advocating for justice, and raising awareness, future leaders can play an essential role in making migration safer and more humane. It’s not just about crossing borders, it’s about protecting dreams and human dignity. (Rachel V, PR Team. Photo: Roffizul H)
