A delegation of 40 International Relations study program (IR) students from President University, including 10 international students from Denmark, China, and Timor-Leste, participated in an academic field trip to Surabaya as part of their Defense Heritage course. Under the guidance of IR’s lecturer, Jeanne Francoise, the visit aimed to deepen students’ understanding of Indonesia’s historical struggle for independence through firsthand exposure to key heritage sites. The itinerary included Monumen Tugu Pahlawan and Museum Sepuluh Nopember, where students examined artifacts and narratives from the 1945 Battle of Surabaya, followed by a visit to Rumah Kelahiran Bung Karno, the childhood residence of Indonesia’s founding president, Soekarno.
The trip provided a profound educational experience, allowing students to engage with Surabaya’s legacy as the “City of Heroes” at Museum Sepuluh Nopember. Participants analyzed historical documents and exhibits that chronicled the resilience of Indonesian forces against colonial powers. The subsequent tour of Rumah Kelahiran Bung Karno offered insights into Soekarno’s early influences and the socio-political context of the independence movement. As a token of appreciation, the delegation presented commemorative plaques to museum representatives, acknowledging their role in preserving national history.
This immersive journey not only enhanced the students’ academic knowledge but also fostered a deeper connection to Indonesia’s defense heritage. The group reflected on the enduring significance of courage and patriotism exemplified by the nation’s historical figures. The field trip underscored the importance of preserving collective memory and served as an inspiration for future leaders in international relations and defense studies. (Rachel V, PR Team.
