On April 17th , 2025, President University hosted “Global Talks” at Fablab, PUCC, featuring two guest speakers from the United Nations International Organization for Migration (UN-IOM) Indonesia: Mr. Jeffrey Labovitz, Chief of Mission, and Mrs. Risa Amrikasari, Liaison for Protocol, Legal, and ASEAN Affairs. The event was officially opened by the Rector of President University, Dr. Handa Abidin, and was attended by students from various majors—particularly International Relations and Law.
The main theme, “The Journey of Migrants: Stories, Challenges, and the Role of Youth in Shaping the Future of Migration,” offered valuable insights into the realities of global migration. Mr. Labovitz shared his experiences from over 28 years of service in humanitarian and migration missions across multiple continents. He spoke about the increasingly complex challenges in migration today, including labor exploitation, human trafficking, and the need for stronger labor agreements.
A powerful and emotional video was screened during the session, showing the real dangers behind fake overseas job offers. The video depicted a person being lured by a job scam abroad, eventually becoming a victim of slavery and abuse—an eye-opener for many in the audience. This prompted thoughtful questions from students during the interactive talk show and Q&A session.
The atmosphere was energetic, with students eager to learn more about real-life migrant issues in Indonesia, government policies, and how IOM supports and protects migrants. The event served not only as an educational session but also as an inspiration for young people to take part in creating safer migration systems in the future. (Rachel V, PR Team. Photo: Roffizul H)
