Faculty of Medicine President University Building a Generation of Competent and Empathetic Doctors
September 09, 2025

The Faculty of Medicine President University (FMPU) offers a distinctive learning concept that emphasizes interactive methods and hands-on practice. In his presentation, Dr. Ridwan, M.Kes, explained that there are eight learning methods designed to help students develop both academic abilities and social skills. These methods include small group discussions that train leadership, game-based quizzes to ease the learning atmosphere, and cross-group discussions to broaden perspectives. In addition, students are given the opportunity for early exposure in community health centers and hospitals, as well as training through laboratory activities and hematology-immunology blocks that highlight practical experience. Parents are also involved through monitoring systems and transparent communication, reflecting FMPUโ€™s commitment to guiding studentsโ€™ overall development.

Prof. Dr. Budi Setiabudiawan, Sp.A(K).M.Kes, emphasized that being accepted into FMPU is both a privilege and a significant responsibility. Out of approximately 3,000 applicants, only 50 students successfully passed the rigorous selection process, which included report assessments, psychological tests, general knowledge, English proficiency, and interviews. According to him, success is not determined solely by intelligence, but also by discipline, diligence, and consistency in attendance. He also introduced the Parent University Learning System (PULS), which allows parents to monitor their childrenโ€™s academic progress. The education pathway at FMPU consists of a 3.5-year undergraduate program and a 2-year professional program, with a curriculum that balances theoretical knowledge, clinical practice, and early exposure to direct patient communication starting from the seventh semester.

Furthermore, Prof. Budi highlighted that discussion is one of the core foundations of learning at FMPU. Each case is discussed within a small group of eight students, with rotating roles such as leader, secretary, and note-taker, while lecturers act only as facilitators. This system is designed to train students to be confident in expressing opinions and leading discussions. Student life is also directed toward fostering empathy and independence, one example being the requirement to live in dormitories during the first year. The campus environment is enriched with various facilities and extracurricular activities, ranging from sports to arts, to help students maintain a balance between academics and non-academic interests. With this holistic approach, FMPU is committed to producing graduates who are not only medically competent but also strong in character and deeply empathetic. (Roffizul H, PR Team. Photo: Marchell)
