The tourism industry contributes significantly to the country's economy. However, behind the good contribution from the economic aspect, the tourism industry affects the environment quality. The excessive occurrence of tourists resulted in environmental issues such as garbage, water crisis, and air pollution that can destruct the tourist attraction itself. Therefore, in a research article entitled “Jakarta’s Tourism Competitiveness: A Environmental Perspective”, the six lecturers proposed an idea that sustainable tourism needs to be considered and applied in tourist destinations. The six lecturers are Yunita Ismail, Filda Rahmiati, and Grace Amin from President University, Togar Simatupang and Dwi Larso from Bandung Institute of Technology, also Norfaridatul Akmaliah Othman from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.
The research article has successfully achieved the Best Paper Award in the 2nd International Conference on Applied Engineering (ICAE) & the International Conference on Applied Economics and Social Science (ICAESS 2019) that is hosted by Politeknik Negeri Batam which was held on 2-3 October 2019, in Batam, Kepulauan Riau, Indonesia. In addition, the research also received funding from the Ministry of Research and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia.
The research in the article focused on Jakarta as one of the tourist destinations that is visited by many foreign tourists. As the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta is not only visited by tourists for vacation but also visited by foreigners for business matters.
The article presented a result that there is a close relationship between solid waste volume and the number of visitors of 14 tourist attractions in Jakarta. Therefore, tourism development must fulfill as sustainable development, considering that tourism is an industry that must protect nature or the environment in order to be able to provide tourism services. Yunita said, “Tourism is one of the main causes of environmental damage. Therefore, the development of the tourism industry must consider the environment so that its sustainability is maintained.”
With the development of environmentally friendly tourism industry, tourism will provide an important role in accelerating the country's economic growth. (SL)
Persaingan Pariwisata Jakarta: Perspektif Lingkungan
Industri pariwisata berkontribusi kepada perekonomian negara. Namun, di balik kontribusinya dalam membangun perekonomian negara, industri pariwisata mempengaruhi kualitas lingkungan. Berlebihnya jumlah pengunjung di suatu tempat wisata mengakibatkan masalah lingkungan seperti sampah, krisis air bersih, dan polusi udara yang dapat menghancurkan tempat wisata itu sendiri. Oleh karena itu, dalam sebuah artikel penelitian berjudul “Jakarta’s Tourism Competitiveness: A Environmental Perspective”, enam dosen mengusulkan sebuah gagasan bahwa pariwisata berkelanjutan perlu dipertimbangkan dan diterapkan dalam sebuah tempat wisata. Keenam dosen tersebut adalah Yunita Ismail, Filda Rahmiati, dan Grace Amin dari President University, Togar Simatupang dan Dwi Larso yang berasal dari Institut Teknologi Bandung, serta Norfaridatul Akmaliah Othman dari Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.
Berkat gagasannya, artikel penelitian ini berhasil memenangkan predikat “Best Paper” dalam the 2nd International Conference on Applied Engineering (ICAE) & the International Conference on Applied Economics and Social Science (ICAESS 2019) yang diadakan oleh Politeknik Negeri Batam pada 2-3 Oktober 2019 di Batam, Kepulauan Riau, Indonesia. Selain itu, penelitian dalam artikel ini juga mendapatkan pendanaan dari Kementerian Riset, Teknologi, dan Pendidikan Tinggi (Kemenristekdikti).
Artikel ini berfokus pada Jakarta sebagai salah satu destinasi wisata yang banyak dikunjungi oleh turis asing. Jakarta yang merupakan ibu kota negara Indonesia tidak hanya dikunjungi oleh turis untuk berwisata, namun juga untuk bekerja atau berbisnis.
Artikel ini mempresentasikan hasil bahwa ada hubungan yang erat antara volume limbah padat dan jumlah pengunjung dari 14 tempat wisata di Jakarta. Oleh karena itu, pengembangan pariwisata harus dilakukan sebagai pembangunan berkelanjutan, mengingat pariwisata adalah industri yang harus melindungi lingkungan agar dapat memberikan layanan pariwisata yang baik dan berkelanjutan. Yunita mengatakan, “Pariwisata merupakan salah satu penyebab utama kerusakan lingkungan. Untuk itu, pengembangan industri pariwisata harus memperhatikan lingkungan sehingga keberlanjutannya dapat terjaga.”
Dengan pengembangan industri pariwisata yang ramah lingkungan, pariwisata akan memberikan peran penting dalam mempercepat pertumbuhan ekonomi negara. (SL)
