INDONESIA NEEDS TO GENERATE THE BIRTH OF MANY NEW ENTREPRENEURS THROUGH CAMPUS

JAKARTA: To escape from the trap of middle-income to high-income countries, Indonesia needs to continue to increase the number of its entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs play an important role in creating jobs. This in turn will encourage an increase in the economic performance of a country. If the country's economy continues to improve, this will contribute to the creation of a civilized and prosperous society, as well as stability for the country.

Referring to the 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Index (GEI) report released by The Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute (GEDI), Indonesia is still ranked 94th out of 137 countries. Referring to the GEI report, Indonesia's Entrepreneurship Index is still inferior to several neighboring countries, such as Brunei Darussalam #53, Malaysia (ranked 58), Thailand #71, even the Philippines #84, and Vietnam #87.

This GEI report discusses the relationship between entrepreneurship, economic development and prosperity. According to GEDI, entrepreneurship plays an important role in creating jobs, economic performance and stability in the country.

The 2018 GEI report also includes the data on the Human Capital Score. Referring to the report, Indonesia's Human Capital Score is still relatively low, which is 16%. Compared with Thailand, that the Human Capital Score is 49%, Malaysia 63% or the US which is 100%.

This condition makes Prof. Neil Towers, project leader of Growth Indonesia - a Triangular Approach (GITA), stated that Indonesia still needs to continue to increase the number of entrepreneurs. "Indonesia's Human Capital score is still relatively lower when compared to several of these countries," said Prof. Towers, who is also a retail marketing expert from the University of Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, in the GITA International Conference which will be held virtually on 8-9 April, 2021.

Prof. Towers added that one of the places to produce new entrepreneurs is universities. In some developed countries, there are indeed many entrepreneurs who are born in campus environment. Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook while still studying at Harvard University. Companies like Yahoo! Inc., Google, Facebook, FedEx are businesses born from campus. In the United States, Stanford University is a university that has produced many businessmen from the campus environment.

The effort to produce more entrepreneurs from the campus environment is what carried out by the GITA consortium led by Prof. Towers. The consortium consists of seven universities from Indonesia and four universities from Europe. At the GITA international conference, Prof. Towers reported that GITA has produced 112 new startup companies with business value of Rp. 115.4 billion. This is clear evidence of the success of GITA in producing new entrepreneurs from the campus environment.

In addition, at the international conference, the GITA consortium also announced the winners of the national student competition for sustainable business proposals and the formation of associations involving universities that are members of the GITA consortium.

Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

According to the Financial Times (2015) records, 46% of graduates from the Babson College MBA program, USA, immediately opened their own business after graduating from college. Then, 34% of Stanfords Graduate School of Business graduates also do business on their own right after graduation. At Harvard Business School, as many as 28% of graduates are directly self-employed. While at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) the Sloan School of Management the figure reached 26%.

In the UK, 27% of Oxford University graduates choose to pursue careers as entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, at the London Business School, 25% of graduates also choose a career as an entrepreneur.

In the future, this figure is expected to continue to increase. In the UK, as quoted at www.sifted.eu, currently about 25% of students there plan to start a business while continuing to study. That's a survey in 2019. This number has increased by more than 30% compared to 2016. The results of this survey have prompted many campuses in the UK to establish business incubators and other programs to encourage students to dare to build startups, especially those based on technology.

Rector of President University, Prof. Dr. Jony Oktavian Haryanto said that if we want to become a developed country, equal to countries such as the US, UK, or Germany, Indonesia must make its campuses as candradimuka craters to create new entrepreneurs.

"To get there, of course, there are many things that must be done by universities. We at President University, for example, have even reorganized the curriculum by putting Entrepreneurship course as early as possible. We also set up a business incubator, partnering with business practitioners to become mentor and investor for the businesses started by students."

That's not enough. Prof. Jony continued, campus also need to have an entrepreneurial paradigm and must be able to build an entrepreneurial ecosystem that is inherent in daily business practices. In essence, the campus needs to be transformed into an Entrepreneurial University.

The efforts of the campuses to produce more new entrepreneurs are in line with the policies of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) through the Merdeka Learning program, Kampus Merdeka. Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture, Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC, Ph.D., explained that through the Merdeka Belajar program, the Merdeka Campus is required to prepare student competencies. One of them is the competence to become an entrepreneur.

"One of the programs of Merdeka Belajar, Kampus Merdeka is to give students the right to study outside their study program for three semesters. During this time, students may choose a series of activities. Among other things, conducting entrepreneurial activities with the guidance of lecturers," said Prof. Nizam.

Prof. Ismunandar, Acting Deputy for Strengthening Research and Development and expert staff in the field of Sustainable Development, Ministry of Research and Technology/ Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional, explained that Indonesia could only become a developed country if the number of entrepreneurs continued to increase.

"Currently, only about 3% of the entire population of Indonesia are entrepreneurs. This number is still too small. The United States and Japan are developed countries because more than 10% of the population are entrepreneurs. For this reason, Kemenristek / BRIN will continue to encourage campuses to be able to produce more new entrepreneurs. For this reason, the campus needs to build an entrepreneurial ecosystem. "

INDONESIA PERLU GENJOT LAHIRNYA BANYAK PENGUSAHA BARU MELALUI KAMPUS

Ekosistem Kewirausahaan

Menurut catatan Financial Times (2015), sebanyak 46% lulusan dari program MBA Babson College, AS, langsung membuka usaha sendiri setamat kuliah. Lalu, 34% lulusan Stanfords Graduate School of Business juga langsung berbisnis sendiri setelah lulus. Sementara di Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management angkanya mencapai 26%.

Dirjen Pendidikan Tinggi, Kemendikbud, Prof. Ir.
