“Being a designer at a time like one should not  work alone,” said Tomy Herseta, a creative director from Bandung, who was invited to be a speaker at the VCD Professional Practices in Design event on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. The event was held at the Charles Himawan Auditorium, Building A, President University (Presuniv) campus in the Jababeka industrial estate, Cikarang was attended by both Visual Communication Design (VCD) and Interior Design (ID) students. This sharing session was guided by Lintang R. Anindita, a lecturer from the VCD Study Program. “Through this event, I encourage VCD and ID students to collaborate on projects,” said Lintang. She continued, “And, hopefully, Tomy Herseta’s sharing, which comes  from his experience, can provide inspiration and insight to students about the importance of collaboration.”

At the event, Tomy shared his experiences when he was still a Bachelor of Interior Design student at the Institut Teknologi Bandung or ITB while pursuing his hobby in music. “Most of the music I make is in collaboration with Gardika Gigih, a pianist. We performed together and spontaneously without any practice,” said Tomy. He admits that he makes music when he feels overwhelmed or is experiencing burnout from his job.

After graduating, Tomy worked on collaborative projects with Indie Labtek, Irama Nusantara, Infino Media, and Plateaux Studio. These projects exposed him to knowledge from multiple disciplines. Then, Tomy continued his studies on scenography in the Netherlands. According to information from various sources, scenography comes from the Greek word, skene means scenery or stage, and grapho means to draw. The science of scenography involves a variety of new disciplines. So, the stage from a scenographic perspective is not only a visual stage but must be integrated with other elements, such as the stage crew, the show itself, and the audience.
