The family business is like a giant tree that brings water and gives life to small trees. However, if the tree is too shady, it will block the sunlight needed by the small trees, so they cannot grow properly and become big. This is a dilemma for family businesses to make their business sustainable from generation to generation. This was conveyed by SD Darmono, founder of the Jababeka Group and President University (PresUniv), in his opening remarks at the webinar entitled Large Family Business & Beyond, Thursday (2/9).

The Faculty of Business, PresUniv, collaborates with Maestro Digital Services, Faculty of Economics & Business, Tarumanagara University and its alumina associations, Ciputra University, and Pelita Harapan University, organized the webinar. Around 800 participants attended the webinar hosted by Dr. Anton Wachidin Widjaja, lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Head of the Master of Technology Management Study Program, PresUniv. The webinar presents Dr. Hadi Cahyadi, MBA, MCL, Founder & Managing Partners of Helios Capital; Dr. Antonius Tanan, MBA, MSc. MA, from Ciputra University; Dr. Winanto Wiryomartani, SH, M.Hum, a legal practitioner and expert on Chinese culture; and Dr. Jacob Donald Tan, lecturer at Pelita Harapan University.

In the webinar, Darmono also shared his experiences when starting a business. “The first generation must understand the art of war. Because they just started their business, the first generation usually hitting here and there. He does this so that the business he pioneered grows and develops,” he said. While the role of the second generation, said Darmono, must understand the technical and commercial aspects to continue the first generation’s business. In addition, they also have to build a system and good corporate governance. For the third generation, Darmono emphasizes the importance of understanding art & culture. “So the third generation must be a cultured person. Its role is not only to make money but to think about society and the country as a whole. So, the focus is not only on money but also on harmony,” he said. (JB Susetiyo, PR team. Photo: JB Susetiyo).
