Lahir sebagai seorang anak dari keluarga besar akademisi telah menjadikannya seperti sekarang ini. Kakeknya - seorang guru besar linguistik terapan - dari pihak ayahnya, adalah seorang rektor di sebuah perguruan tinggi negeri di Sumatera Selatan sedangkan mendiang ayahnya mendapatkan pengangkatan penuh sebagai dosen hukum di Jambi. Pengangkatan akademis pertamanya dimulai pada tahun 2000 di sebuah perguruan tinggi swasta di Jakarta Pusat, empat bulan setelah ia menyelesaikan studi sarjananya di Universitas Indonesia (UI) dengan gelar BA di bidang Komunikasi Massa. Ia mengajar beberapa mata pelajaran pengenalan seperti Pengantar Humas, Pengantar Teori Komunikasi dan Komunikasi Pemasaran, sekaligus bekerja sebagai jurnalis TV di salah satu stasiun TV swasta nasional di Jakarta Timur, ditugaskan di kantor DPR RI yang meliput isu politik dan urusan internasional. Setelah menghabiskan dua tahun sebagai jurnalis dengan posisi terakhir sebagai Produser Berita Eksekutif untuk berita internasional / diplomatik, ia memutuskan untuk melanjutkan studinya di Sekolah Pascasarjana Hubungan Internasional, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Politik, Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta dan meraih gelar MA dalam Diplomasi dan Studi Strategis, dengan topik tesis tentang The Bush Doctrine and Just War Theory dan telah dianugerahi sebagai tesis terbaik di Fakultas dalam periode 1997-2004.

Sebagai anggota aktif dari asosiasi akademis yang sangat dihormati di bidang media dan komunikasi - International Association of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), ia menghadiri konferensi secara teratur dan melakukan makalah penelitian baik secara nasional maupun internasional di bidang spesialisasi yang berkisar pada persimpangan antara Komunikasi dan politik dengan hubungan Internasional. Topik penelitiannya saat ini applying Critical Discourse Analysis and framing as primary methods - berpusat pada bagaimana media arus utama Indonesia melakukan konstruksi pemberitaan kelompok agama Islam sejak era reformasi Indonesia hingga saat ini.
