Dr. Nino Viartasiwi memperoleh gelar master dan doktor dalam Hubungan Internasional dari Sekolah Pascasarjana Hubungan Internasional, Universitas Ritsumeikan, Kyoto-Jepang. Nino memfokuskan penelitiannya pada studi konflik, gelar Ph.D. disertasi membahas political economy of violence in the West Papua conflict. Kemudian, ia mengalihkan minat penelitiannya ke isu pemindahan paksa sebagai akibat konflik dan isu transnasionalisme.

Sebagai anggota kelompok dan sebagai individu, Nino menerima hibah penelitian dan hibah pendidikan dari lembaga terkemuka seperti Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Sumitomo Foundation, British Institute, MEXT of the Japan Government, the SUN Scholarship (CEU Summer University) , May 18 Memorial Foundation, dan masih banyak lagi.
