In the professional work area, professionalism is one thing that is demanded in all professions. Professionalism means an expert who is able to show his best service. We can learn professionalism through tiered formal education from kindergarten to university. In addition, professionalism can also be learned through non-formal education from the environment and day to day life experiences.

In an online public lecture entitled "Higher Education and Professionalism of Human Resources in Indonesia", lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering at President University, Prof. Ir. Binsar Hariandja, M. Eng., Ph.D., discussed how the educational objectives of higher education institutions affect student professionalism on Thursday (2/7).

Binsar mentioned that in Indonesia, the volume of knowledge in universities is huge. However, students often come to class without enough preparation. They do not read and find out about what will be learned in class beforehand. Therefore, students are not fully obtained the essence of the knowledge delivered in class. This condition then makes students failed in the exam. Binsar argued that this is happening because students did not know the purpose of being in the university. For this reason, students need to get special guidance on their role in the university. This will be closely related to the quality of these students when they graduate from university and enter the professional work.

In producing human resources with high professionalism, universities in Indonesia face several challenges. First, the learning flow in some universities is too focused on theory, so practical things are sometimes ignored. The next challenge is the ability to pay low tuition fees so that not a few students decide to leave before graduating. The changing format of the university curriculum is also a challenge that forces students to respond to varied industry needs.

Mr. Binsar said that his problem certainly affects the professionalism in Indonesia in a negative direction. Therefore, to reduce this problem, the need for cooperation between universities and companies in holding interfaces. Companies also need to provide input for curriculum development in terms of providing funding through training and scholarships.

Binsar said that the challenges faced by the university are certainly influenced the professionalism of graduates in Indonesia. Therefore, a collaboration between universities and companies is needed to produce human resources with high professionalism. The company also needs to provide input for curriculum development and the provision of education costs through training and scholarships where this has been implemented by the President University. As one of the places to produce high quality Indonesian human resources, President University always builds partnership with industry, both in the preparation of curriculum, living laboratories, and internship programs.
