COVID-19 pandemic has affected many jobs in certain ways, one of those jobs is a TV news journalist. In order to know the major shifts in the TV news industry, students from Journalism concentration of Communication major had the privilege to conduct an online general lecture with Ariyo Ardi, SE, the Deputy Chief Editor of iNEWS MNC Group Media Jakarta, on May 17th, 2020, online. The general lecture was hosted by the Head of Communication Study Program, M. Raudy Gathmyr, S.Sos., M.Si.
This general lecture began with Ariyo who explained that a huge change occurred as the first positive COVID-19 patient in Indonesia was announced in March 2020. “This pandemic has affected our workflow, and there was nothing we could do except adapting to the current situation,” said Ariyo. As an example, since the Cabinet meeting and the meeting of the House of People’s Representatives were conducted online, his coverage team was not obligated to meet the interviewee in person.
Despite that, Ariyo stated that there are some news that have to be covered on the spot. In that case, the news coverage team will still go to cover the news with the necessary equipment in accordance with the health protocol to avoid getting infected by COVID-19. Other than that, national media have also established collaborations aimed to ease news coverage activities to refrain from sending their team to the spot every single time.
Ariyo explained, in addition to the changing reporting trends, television viewers' consumption trends also changed. From the data his team collected, there was an increasing number of viewers of news, children's programs, and health product advertisements. From this data, he said that it is highly important to ensure that the team are producing and airing a TV shows that fulfill the public's need.
On this occasion, Ariyo advised the young journalists to work harder because recruitment would become more difficult, especially with the fact that no one was sure when the pandemic would end. (JD/SL)
Kuliah Umum Jurnalistik: Peliputan Berita Televisi di Tengah Pandemi
Pandemi Covid-19 telah mempengaruhi banyak sektor pekerjaan. Salah satu pekerjaan yang terdampak adalah jurnalis berita televisi. Untuk mengetahui perubahan apa saja yang terjadi, mahasiswa Jurnalistik dari Program Studi Ilmu Komunikasi menyelenggarakan kuliah umum bersama Ariyo Ardi, S.E., Wakil Pemimpin Redaksi iNews MNC Group Media Jakarta, pada tanggal 17 Mei 2020 secara online dan terbuka untuk umum. Kuliah umum ini juga mengundang Kepala Program Studi Ilmu Komunikasi, M. Raudy Gathmyr, S.Sos., M.Si. sebagai moderator.
Kuliah umum ini dimulai dengan Ariyo yang menjelaskan bahwa perubahan terjadi diumumnya kan pasien positif COVID-19 pertama di Indonesia pada Maret 2020. “Pandemi ini telah mempengaruhi cara kerja kita, dan tidak ada yang bisa kita lakukan selain beradaptasi,” kata Ariyo. Sebagai contoh, dirinya menyebutkan bahwa sejak Sidang Kabinet dan Sidang DPR dilakukan secara online, timnya tidak perlu hadir untuk mewawancarai narasumber secara langsung.
Meski begitu, Ariyo mengungkapkan ada beberapa berita yang harus diliput secara langsung di lapangan. Jika demikian, tim liputan akan tetap meliput dilengkapi dengan peralatan yang sesuai dengan protokol kesehatan agar tidak terinfeksi oleh virus COVID-19. Selain itu, media-media di tanah air juga telah mengadakan kolaborasi yang bertujuan untuk memudahkan peliputan sebuah berita sehingga mereka tidak harus mengirim tim ke lapangan setiap waktu.
Ariyo menjelaskan, selain tren peliputan yang berubah, tren konsumsi penonton televisi pun berubah. Dari data yang ia dan tim kumpulkan, terdapat peningkatan jumlah penonton berita, acara anak, dan iklan produk kesehatan. Dari data ini, ia mengatakan bahwa sangatlah penting untuk memastikan bahwa apa yang ditayangkan sesuai dengan kebutuhan masyarakat.
Dalam kesempatan ini, Ariyo berpesan kepada para jurnalis muda untuk bekerja lebih keras karena perekrutan akan menjadi lebih sulit dan ketat, terutama dengan fakta bahwa tidak ada yang tau pasti kapan pandemi akan berakhir. (JD)
