Jakarta, Indonesia—President University held a general lecture entitled “Disaster: Why and What Should We Do?” and took place in Menara Batavia, Jakarta on Wednesday (31/10). The lecture was delivered by Prof. J. Scott Younger, International Chancellor of President University and attended by approximately 60 students from various majors.

This public lecture was held because lately there were disasters happened in Indonesia. The seminar explained various types of disasters that occurred in other countries including Indonesia. In the event, Prof. Scott Younger explained the history of natural disasters that have occurred in Indonesia, why natural disasters occur, and disaster management.

As an earthquake and tsunami had recently hit Palu and Donggala, in addition to material and non-material losses, there are also environmental damages, one of them is soil liquefaction. Soil liquefaction is a phenomenon that occurs when saturated soil loses strength and stiffness due to some tensions, such as sudden earthquake or changes in tension, so that dense soils change into heavy liquid or water. This liquefaction results in the soil’s carrying capacity loss.

"Disaster which happened in Palu caused land liquefaction and Civil Engineering study program happens to has a subject Engineering Geology and Soil Mechanics. This course is very related to the incident of Liquefaction in Palu. I hope with this event, students will be more responsive to disasters and their social awareness and scientific skill will increase after attending this seminar," said Roselina, Head of Civil Engineering Study Program President University.

Eur.Eng. Dr. J. Scott Younger, OBE, FICE serves as International Chancellor of President University. Eur.Eng. Dr. Younger is a recognized leader in infrastructure development across Southeast Asia.

The event closed with a question and answer session and a group photo.

Jakarta, Indonesia—President University menyelenggarakan kuliah umum yang bertajuk “Disaster: Why and What Should We Do?” dan diselenggarakan di Menara Batavia, Jakarta pada Rabu (31/10).
