JAKARTA, 4 September 2018 - University of Glasgow from the U.K visited Indonesia again, this time through Prof. Frank Cotton as the Vice Principal who spoke on "The Future of Global Higher Education" held at President Lounge, Menara Batavia. The event was attended by approximately 150 distinguished guests including the Rector of President University, Dr. Jony O. Haryanto.
Prof. Frank Cotton was invited by Dr. (HC) S.D. Darmono as Chairman of Jababeka Group, who has recently received the Doctor Honoris Causa from University of Glasgow. This is also the concern of Mr. S.D. Darmono to develop Indonesia's human resources for the future development.
In his lecture, Prof. Frank Cotton said that to improve the reputation of a university, it is not from the teaching system but from the amount of research. A research-based university must have a balance in three things, namely Societal Engagement, Teaching, and Research. “On a macro scale, the absence of any of these strands within the Higher Education ecosystem makes the other two unsustainable,” said Prof. Cotton.
Furthermore, Prof. Cotton concluded that it is difficult to know exactly how the sector will evolve but some things are very likely: the sector will increase in size and be more differentiated, more international (higher mobility, multinational universities, or consortia of universities), more online education/fewer campus-based universities, and model will change to harness technology.
JAKARTA, 4 September 2018 – Universitas Glasgow dari U.K kembali hadir di Indonesia, kali ini melalui Prof. Frank Cotton selaku Vice Principal yang akan berbicara mengenai “Masa Depan Perguruan Tinggi” yang diadakan di President Lounge, Menara Batavia. Acara ini dihadiri oleh kurang lebih 150 tamu undangan termasuk Rektor President University, Dr. Jony O. Haryanto.
Prof. Frank Cotton hadir dalam rangka undangan dari Dr. (HC) S.D. Darmono selaku Chairman Jababeka Group, yang baru saja mendapatkan gelar Doktor Honoris Causa dari Universitas Glasgow tersebut. Hal ini juga merupakan kepedulian Bapak S.D. Darmono akan perkembangan SDM Indonesia dalam mengisi pembangunan kedepan.
Dalam uraiannya, Prof. Frank Cotton menyampaikan bahwa untuk meningkatkan reputasi sebuah universitas, bukanlah dari sistem mengajarnya namun dari jumlah riset yang telah dilakukan. Sebuah universitas berbasis riset haruslah mempunyai keseimbangan dalam tiga hal, yaitu Societal Engagement, Teaching, dan Research. "Pada skala makro, ketiadaan salah satu dari ketiga hal tersebut dalam ekosistem suatu Pendidikan Tinggi membuat dua lainnya tidak berkelanjutan," jelas Prof. Cotton.
Selanjutnya Prof. Cotton menyimpulkan bahwa sedikit tidak mudah untuk mengetahui bagaimana perkembangan sektor Pendidikan Tinggi akan berkembang, namun ada beberapa hal yang memungkinkan terjadi, diantaranya: sektor ini akan bertambah besar dan menjadi lebih terdiferensiasi, lebih internasional (mobilitas tinggi, universitas multinasional, atau konsorsium universitas), pendidikan online lebih banyak/lebih sedikit universitas berbasis kampus, dan pemanfaatan teknologi.
