Adam Kurniawan Library

Adam Kurniawan Library

Initiated by Mr. S.D. Darmono, one of the founders of President University, the university library was first opened in 2003. As the university grew, a bigger space was needed to house the large collection of books and materials as well serve the information needs of the library users and as a result, it doubled in size.

The library was officially named The Adam Kurniawan Library in honor of Adam Kurniawan, who was warmly known as “Pak Adam” by his friends and business associates. He was a respected entrepreneur in the Indonesian textile industry and a co-founder of the Jababeka Group. He knew the importance of helping others to achieve success in their lives. He was an important figure who had a great concern for the nation’s education, the university and its library.

To help manage the library system as well as all the collection of books and materials, an IT-based library information system called Suteki was installed and implemented in 2007 to serve the campus community as well as all the library users.

Under the coordination and fund-raising activities of Dr. Agus Canny, the Vice Rector III of President University, donations of library materials have been given from many sources such as private institutions, Jababeka business partners, PATA, Indonesian ministries, Asia Foundation, LPPM, Bank Indonesia and other organizations. Leaders of President University from the rectors, heads of departments, faculty staff even the alumni of the university have also been involved in donating library materials.

President University has grown a lot in the past few years and it recently became important to expand the space of the library, the books and materials as well as its services to accommodate the growing student body and achieve the vision of the university. The library started renovations in May 2016 and it is now ready to be used as of August 2016 with its new phase of “home” and “services” to serve the academic and literature needs of the university.

The design concept of the new library celebrates the UNESCO 4 pillars of Education: ‘Learning to Know’ ‘Learning to Do’ ‘Learning to Be’ and ‘Learning to Live together’. These four pillars of education are represented in the library by the four pillars of bookshelves and 4 big crystal lamps hanging on the four corners above the book collection, as the heart of the library. The pillars in the library are made of concrete and each pillar is covered with two mirrors with bare concrete in the middle, and is equipped with wall lamps.

The bare concrete symbolizes that knowledge and wisdom starts from “raw” data while the wall lamps represent education. These pillars with bare concrete, mirrors and lamps indicate that “raw” data can be found in the library materials and it will be transformed into information and knowledge through education which can be shared and multiplied by others. It is hoped that the library will be used to maximize the learning process of our students as a fundamental part of their academic and research endeavors at President University.
